Technical and Operational History. The Aircraft Carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army. Volume 2
In the course of the Pacific War, Japan urgently needed more aircraft carriers, and that quickly. The problem was sought to be solved in several ways: By mass producing medium-sized aircraft carriers; by converting warships or auxiliary ships into light aircraft carriers; and by converting several large passenger steamers. In addition, special aircraft carriers were developed.
The technical section in this second volume focuses on the engine systems as well as the shipboard aircraft and their weapons, while the account of carrier operations ranges from the Second Solomon Islands Sea Battle in August 1942 to the Battle of Cape Engano in October 1944, which also marked the end of the Japanese carrier fleet.
