Bench Wars 1

My work bench was in terrible shape. Disorganized, invariably messy and absolutely slowing me down. My main problems seemed to be as follows:

• I have a ton of tools and my methods of storing them were bad.

• I was mostly using small caddies of the type used for storing kitchen utensils.

• I also was using small artist's carousels, which are typically used for pencils and brushes. They also have a small tray along their lower edge.

• Many tools were hard to get at and many went unused as a result.

• Some storage was created with small IKEA metal cabinets nearby, but this kept tools a fair distance from the bench.

• Nothing ever seemed to get put away. During work sessions a big pile of tools would form to my right (I'm right-handed), making it even more difficult to work and find things.

BTW, my basic work bench is an IKEA wooden kitchen "butcher block" counter top mounted onto two inexpensive kitchen cabinets. These were purchased at a home store (Home Depot) as boxed kits.

One day we received a small paint rack in a sample package from MiG Ammo. This was intriguing because it was laser cut fiber board. It came as a small kit and once assembled it was quite sturdy. It accommodated different sized paint bottles and clearly had some thought behind its design.

Although it was a promotional item, with the MiG Ammo logo on it, it also had the initials "HZ." After a little investigating, I found this stood for Hobby Zone and that information lead me here:

Coming Soon from Trumpeter!

We received our update from Stevens International.

These new armor kits will be out in November.

7120, 1/72 Soviet Komintern Artillery Tractor
NEW TOOL! The Soviet Komintern Artillery Tractor was based on the T-12 and T-24 chassis. Unlike its predecessors, the Komintern was put into mass production and used to tow medium artillery weapons used by the Soviets. Kit consists 20 parts, including the cab and tracks.

9504, 1/35 Soviet KV-7 Object 227 Tank
NEW VARIANT! The KV series of Soviet heavy tanks were used by the Red Army during WWII. The KV-7 Object 227, also known as the U-13, included experimental self-propelled guns that were absent on previous models. Only one unit was ever produced and was only used for testing. Kit consists of over 250 parts, including a brass wire and plastic tracks.

9506 1/35 Russian Kazakhstan Army BMPT Armored Fighting Vehicle
NEW VARIANT! The BMPT “Terminator” is a post-Cold War AFV manufactured in Russia. Despite being used by many countries at the time, Kazakhstan is currently the only country still operating the BMPT. Kit consists of over 1,100 parts, including photo-etched parts, copper cable, and individual track links.

The really big item coming from Trumpeter isn't a tank though- it's a 1:48 scale U-Boat!

6801 1/48 German DKM Type VIIC U-552 U-Boat
NEW TOOL! The German Type VII submarines were the most common U-boat Germany used throughout WWII. Modelled after their earlier WWI designs, the German Type VIIC boats were created in 1933 as a new method of attacking enemy ships. They became the go-to weapon for the German U-boat force, with 568 commissioned in the last five years of WWII. It differed from the model before it with the addition of active sonar and some mechanical improvements that made it longer and heavier than its predecessors. At 220-feet long and with a submerged speed of 8.7 miles per hour, the VIIC U-boat was one of the most devastating weapons in the German arsenal during WWII. The first U-boat of this size ever created in plastic model form. Kit consists of over 1,100 parts, including a one-piece hull and photo-etched parts. The completed kit is over 55 inches long and features a clear starboard side hull for viewing the interior detail.

Holy King Tigers Batman!

www.dragonmodelsusa.com

Dragon USA just dropped us a line. Their update included news of a revised King Tiger from Dragon and three from Takom. It looks like the Takom kits will have full interiors and zimmerit too! The last item will definitely entice German rare armor fans- the Hetzer with the 15cm sIG33.

DRA6840, Sd.Kfz.182 Kingtiger Henschel Production w/Zimmerit s.Pz.Abt.505 Russia 1944

Available September 2016. Click on the pic for more info.

What sets this 1/35 scale kit apart is the pre-injected Zimmerit coating on the upper hull and turret. Of course, the kit perfectly mimics the original Kingtigers of s.Pz.Abt.505 in that there are rectangles on the turret where there is no Zimmerit to allow the unit insignia to be painted on. No one does Zimmerit better than Dragon, with the texture carefully and realistically crafted to scale. Zimmerit is a unique characteristic on many German tanks, and instead of having to mess and fiddle around with putty, many modelers have stated a preference for having it pre-molded on their kits. Of course, the famous insignia is included as high-quality decals. As a special bonus, Dragon also placed in the box a second turret with a completely normal Zimmerit coating, thus giving modelers even more choices to build a regular Kingtiger. This kit will have modelers charging down to their model shops to see and buy it for themselves!

Special Features for all TAKOM versions:
- Individual Tracks
- 2 Types of markings
- PE and Clear parts included
- Full interior parts included
- Scale-thickness armor plate
- Detailed static display plastic model
- All hatches can be built in open or closed position

Available September 2016. Click on the pic for more info.

This new 1/35 scale kit is phenomenally detailed. It is far more than just a hybrid of Dragon’s Hetzer chassis and s.IG.33/2 howitzer, for this kit required numerous new parts to pull off a realistic depiction of this vehicle. The kit has a brand new upper hull, superstructure, fighting compartment, idler wheel, storage bin and associated interior detail such as ammunition racks. Furthermore, two options are available to fit out the aft of the fighting compartment. At the rear is a new exhaust and muffler, which comes with a photo-etched guard. This self-propelled howitzer has hitherto never been available in plastic, so Dragon’s creation makes yet another Hetzer variant readily obtainable by all. As well as the regular Hetzer tank destroyer already offered by Dragon, modelers can now add this support vehicle with heavy 15cm gun to their collections.

Dragon USA Update! New Panther Kit!

This kit is logically based on Dragon’s existing Panther family kits, as well as the previously released V2, but a number of new parts have been created just for this release. Examples include the storage bins on the rear of the hull, new exhaust mufflers (and curved horizontal cover plate) and a pair of new air intake covers on the engine deck. This Versuchs-Serie pre-production tank has been intricately replicated in 1/35 scale, giving connoisseurs even easier access to the fascinating lineage of the Panther family.

New from Dragon USA

www.dragonmodelsusa.com

Two new Dragon kits that will be available in August:

DRA6688, StuG.III Ausf.E

Dragon has already launched a number of splendid new-generation 1/35 scale kits of the StuG.III family, but to date these have been later production types like the Ausf.G. Dragon is now redressing this gap by offering a brand new kit of the Ausf.E, which is designed by Japanese designers and Dragon team. Also it is the only 1/35 StuG.III Ausf.E in nowadays standard available on market! This 1/35 scale rendition of the tank destroyer boasts many great new plastic parts. These include the superstructure roof, headlights and covers, StuK37 short-barreled gun, fighting-compartment floor, frontal armor and cleaning rods in their associated rack. This is Dragon’s finest model ever of the important StuG.III Ausf.E, and modelers will find it a treat to assemble and finish thanks to its superior level of detail and ease of assembly.

DRA7521, 1/72 Churchill Mk.IV AVRE

Dragon Armor Pro previously released a popular 1/72 scale kit of a Churchill Mk.III AVRE, and this has now been followed by a model of the similar Mk.IV combat engineer vehicle. Again, it features the Petard 290mm main armament, plus a suitable turret and brand new suspension units that are stowed on the rear fenders. This model of the Churchill Mk.IV combat engineer tank is beautifully detailed, and the kit assembles quickly and easily into an accurate model thanks to time-saving elements like one-piece DS tracks and single-piece bogies to represent the complicated running gear. For modelers wishing to depict a Normandy scene or something similar, this new kit is a must-have!

Tamiya 1:48 scale Panzer IVH Photo Preview

32584, Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. H Late Production

This kit is almost identical to the earlier Panzer IV Ausf. J (32518) with the exception of this sprue:

It includes the turret traverse muffler, turret hatches, hull schurzen and a new half figure for the commander's cupola. It would have been nice if the front schurzen section had the cutout seen on many vehicles.  The addition of the air filter array as seen on many mid-production Ausf. H examples for the right hull side would have made this kit even more versatile.

A new plastic hull tub replaces the die-cast one found in the Ausf. J kit as well:

From a look at the rest of the parts trees and prior experience with the Ausf. J kit, our impressions are that this kit is pretty simple and can be ready for paint in a few hours.

A zimmerit sticker sheet for this kit is available as item 12661. It looks like this:

The already existing PE and resin accessories from Hauler, Aber and Eduard for the Ausf. J kit will also come in handy for the detail-minded.

Tamiya AMX-13 Photo Megaganza

Our first impression was that this kit is everything that Tamiya is famous for. It's simple but well detailed but still leaves room for aftermarket companies to jump in.

From the instructions, it looks like this kit could easily be built in front of the TV in a few evenings. The tracks are vinyl and Photo Etch detail is limited to a single, well-rendered screen for the circular intake fan on the engine deck. A half figure and decals for two French Army vehicles are provided. The only thing we saw that was missing was some periscopes for the commander's cupola, but this is easy to fix.

And now for the sprue pics:
